My "Angel" is born

Angel

Goldie Bronze

I am extremely happy to finally be able to create this angel that has been in my heart for a long time. I have always loved the traditional folk art angels carved in wood from Mexico and I wanted to have my own interpretation of them in my metal work.

Angels have a beautiful symbolic meaning, they can represent love, faith, compassion, renewal, protection, courage and much more. In my personal case they have been a great inspiration of faith, protection and love in my life.

I really hope I can transmit these feeling when you see the angel, when I made it I was thinking in all those moments in my life where I knew my angel was with me and my whole family.

This is just the beginning of a whole collection I will be creating with my "Angel."

Hope you like it!

Honoring Mieko Takahashi Shull and Lucia Gulino: Etsy Metalclay Team Raffle

I am honor to be part of the Etsy Metalclay Team and it was in this group were I met Mieko and Lucia. These two wonderful ladies were not only talented but the nicest persons all the time. They always have nice words and a lot of support for all the other members of the team. Their work was beautiful and you could really see how much they enjoyed life and doing what they were doing.

Sadly for all of us in the team, our teammates and friends Mieko and Lucia passed away recently. We are all very sad to have lost two beautiful souls and wanted to do something in their honor. Members of the team donated a hand made charm made with silver, bronze or copper to create two bracelets. The bracelet chains are hand made with fused argentium sterling silver links with custom made taggles for each bracelet. The bracelet is 7 1/4 inches.

We will raffle the two bracelets and all the proceeds will be donated to charities in their memory. The proceeds will be split 50/50 between World Vision (Mieko's favorite charity) and an art scholarship in Lucia's name.

I made one of these beautiful charms, it is the bracelet with the flower toggle in memory of Mieko.

Please help me and my team member by supporting our raffle, you will love to have one of these bracelets. Buying one ticket ($5 each) will give you two opportunities to win a bracelet.

Visit this page to find out more information and to buy your ticket.

Thank You in advance for your help !

Love,
Lorena ♥

My Virgin is finished

Since I was invited to be the lead artist for Dia de los Muertos: La Ofrenda at SSA, I have been painting some pieces I will display during the event.

I am planning in having some of my pieces of jewelry, paintings, figurines and folk art inspired in the day of the dead tradition of my country Mexico. All these pieces will be made by me and it will be the first time I will show more than just my jewelry.

Painting and making folk art is something I enjoy doing a lot. I have never taken classes for painting or learn how to create the folk art but I like it to be this way much better because all my work is 100% what comes from my heart.

One piece that will be the center piece for my altar is a painting I made in a hand carved wood tray of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It took me more than 5 months to finished it, I painted almost everything but I left the face plain until today that I felt it was the right time to bring her in my painting.

My First "Nicho" is Finished !

A couple of days ago I started painting some wood boxes to make new homes for my figurine rings I made last year.
They needed a perfect display for them and instead of looking for something made already, I decided I will make them their perfect home.

I forgot how much I enjoy making folk art, painting the boxes made me realized my big love for this form of art. Every minute I have spent making them is full of joy and wonderful memories of my country.

I will be making more than eight nichos in total but I may make more. This is the first one I have finished and it was inspired in my Angel ring.

I first painted the wood box in red and started drawing free hand some flowers and leaves.

While I was painting my box I started talking an online workshop with the amazing Keith Lo Bue to learn how to work with steel wire. I took a class with him in Houston already but I knew this new workshop will be incredible and I am having a GREAT time.

During the first couple of videos, we had to start playing with a piece of wire to practice and when I saw the piece of wire I knew what I could do with it, instead of just leaving that in a box of "practice" pieces.

I grabbed my stamping tools and added some stamps in my piece. I played a little more with it and adapted the design to my box.

Yes, I added some metal into my "Nicho" and I am super HAPPY at how it makes  my nicho more ME !!

Making a home for my little figurines

It been almost a year since I made my ring figurines and after spending a day cleaning up my studio I noticed they were all inside a box and I felt very sad about it.

I LOVE making them, they gave so much joy and looking at them all together inside a small box make me realize they deserve much better than that.

I took them out of the box and decided to make them a new home.

Looking around me studio, I saw something that will work perfect for what I wanted to make. I want to each have their own space and I am very sure I will have a great time making them.

I painted some unfinished wood boxes in bright colors (of course!) and this is just the beginning of how their new home will look like.

I will post the "nichos" with my rings inside them when I finished making them!

Love,
Lorena ♥

Happy Summer to all !!

I am so sorry I have been so quiet in my blog this year. Lots of new opportunities are coming my way and I have been very busy. I can not say that I am sad about it because I am learning so much and having a great time, but I do missed writing in the blog and sharing with all of you what I am doing.
The kids are out of school now and we are getting ready to spend a wonderful summer with them. They did a great job at school and deserve to have a trip maybe next month.
What are your plans for summer? Are you traveling or taking any classes?
I will be going to the last PMC Conference at the end of this month and although I am sad because it will be the last, I can not wait to be there and see again wonderful friends and meet some of them for the first time.
If you are going to the PMC Conference, SEE YOU THERE !!
I am also teaching a class at SSA in July, my class name is PMC3: Making a Hollow Ring.
I have also been busy making new pieces and working more with Sterling PMC, I am very happy about this type of metal clay.

Here are some of my new pieces.

Metal Clay & Color

I am very happy to share with all of you that I am part of a wonderful new book coming up this summer. I was invited to be part of a group of artists who will share projects made with metal clay and different mediums to add color. The book's name is Metal Clay & Color by Kalmbach Books and complied by Mary Wohlgemuth.

20 leading artists (Janet Alexander, Lorena Angulo, Lorrene Baum-Davis, Maggie Bergman, Pat Bolgar, Susan Breen Silvy, Barbara Briggs, Sandra Butchko, Catherine Davies Paetz, Pam East, Joy Funnell, Vickie Hallmark, Hadar Jacobson, Patricia Kimle, Irina Miech, Kim Otterbein, Cindy Pankopf, Cindy Silas, Jewelyn Vanoni and Michela Verani ) contributed ideas and projects for adding color to metal clay.

I created two projects for the book with bronzclay and added color using Creative paperclay and Gilders Paste, I will also have some images of my work for the gallery.

I am sure you will be inspired by the 25 projects included in the book.

Humor in Craft by Brigitte Martin

Since I learned about the title of this book, I was very curious to see what the book was going to be about.
Humor in Craft is a wonderful book showcasing incredible pieces of art, the title could not be more perfect. The author Brigitte Martin, who is the creator and editor of Crafthaus , features a wonderful array of art works from artists around the world.
The book itself is beautifully made and has great quality, a perfect book to have in any coffee table for everyone to enjoy.

Every page is filled with great images of pieces made with all different types of materials and mediums, each representing the personal way every artists views and makes humor be part of their work.
Schiffer books is known for publishing very nice gallery type books and this one is no exception.
Brigitte Martin did a great job putting together this beautiful book, it is  definitively a book to have in any art studio or home of anyone who enjoys and appreciates art.

I am the Lead Artist for Dia de los Muertos: La Ofrenda at Southwest School of Art

It is a great honor to have been invited to be the Lead Artist for Dia de los Muertos: La Ofrenda at the wonderful Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, Texas.

I am very happy to have the opportunity to share this wonderful tradition from my country, Mexico, with all the community in San Antonio.

Southwest School of Art has been doing the altars for years and this time I will lead this wonderful event.

The invitation came at the best moment for me after having a very difficult summer in 2011 when I lost three very important family members.

This will give me the incredible opportunity to make a day of the dead altar to honor them and all my other family members that are not with us any more in body, but they will always be with us in spirit.

I will make my best to transmit why the altars are so important in our culture and why we see dead in a totally different way.

Hope you will come to see it if you live in San Antonio and the surrounding areas, I will love to see you there.

New pieces in my Arbol de Vida Collection

Since I started making and designing my jewelry I have been making various trees of life in different forms. I always love the symbolic meaning of the "Arbol de Vida" and it has been my passion to make them all the time.

The tree of life represent the union between earth and heaven. It was said that the founder gods in Mexico came down to earth through the trees. I love to make them using flowers and birds because they represent new life, hope and love.

My latest piece is going to be a necklace and I am still working in it. It gives me joy to see this piece come alive little by little.
©2012 Lorena Angulo

My other pieces in this collection are one more brooch and earrings. Every piece I design is unique and have the same feeling of nostalgia about the wonderful folk art from my beautiful country, Mexico.
