SSA- All School Exhibition 2011

Southwest School of Art (SSA) had a wonderful Opening reception on June 2 for their annual All School Exhibition.
The exhibition showcases outstanding works in various media by students, teachers and artists at the Southwest School of Art.
I, as an adjunct faculty and studio artist, have two of my pieces in this exhibition representing the metal clay medium.

I was so happy to see a great part of the exhibition by the SSA Teen Studio Intensive students who presented paintings inspired in their emotive experience listening to the music of the Beatles. This group of talented teens is led by a super talented and great teacher at SSA, Rainey.

My Frida !

I have always been an admirer of Frida's life and work but mostly her life and the way she lived it. She had a difficult journey but she always managed to come back from painful experiences stronger and more willing to live her life to the fullest.

I feel the same way, I have had some difficult moments in my life but I have learned to take the positive ALWAYS and learn from it. Life is to short to waste it in small things.

I wanted to make a piece dedicated to Frida, and finally this week I got the courage and created a ring in her honor.
This is my humble interpretation of her and how I see her.

My first step was to hand sculpted Frida with Creative Paperclay.

Then I created a tree of life and a sacred heart with wings. These symbols are very important to me and I think they go perfectly with Frida's life.

Finally I added life to the piece by coloring it with acrylics.

Frida was never afraid to the dead and even though she suffered from a terrible accident that left her in pain for the rest of her life, she always had her wings to fly and express her life through her paintings.

We have to always see the glass half full and not half empty !
