Say Si : Muertitos Fest 2010

I was invited to teach again this year at Say Si to a small group of talented students. Last year was my first time teaching at Say Si for this event and I LOVED what the students created, you can see their work in my blog post from last year.

I really enjoyed working with these students and seeing how their creativity emerged in every piece they made.
All the students at Say Si are incredible talented.

During the class we made some pieces for their annual Muertitos Fest that will take place on November 4, 5 and 6.

Muertitos Fest is a day of the dead family celebration and the students at Say Si make fantastic pieces of art for this wonderful event.

These are some of the beautiful pieces they created with bronze. All their pieces will be available for sale during their Muertitos Fest.

Dia de Muertos 2010

I spent this past weekend having a lot of FUN making my "Calaveras" for my next event.

I was invited to participate in the Dia de los Muertos Open house by Patty Henry, owner of Casa Manos Alegres located in the heart of La Villita.

The event will take place on Sunday, October 31 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Patty is a great supporter of hand crafted folk art and I am honored to be in her event this year with incredible artists like Pauline Chapa and Elvis and Arturo Castillo.

I made a group of calaveras with copper.
I really enjoyed creating the skulls and sharing this process with my two kids. They were so happy to see how the skulls transformed from the beginning to the end.
If you live in the area I will love to see you there !!

Love and tolerance

I am sad Today to know of another kid being a victim of bullies.

I just can not understand why some kids can be so rude and hurt so much other kids just because they "are" different.

We as parents have to educate our kids to love and respect everyone without any judgment.
Tolerance has to be embraced by anyone, taking time to really know each other.
My wonderful son has been a victim of bullies since he was in elementary school because he has been considered by some kids to be strange or different. My son is very smart, but this does not mean he is "different".

The bullying has caused him a lot of pain and his self-esteem was affected.

We have given him a lot of love and help, to make him recover from all this and even though he is much better, sometimes he can not take it any more. I am always close to my son and talk a lot to him to reinforce how much he is loved and what a GREAT kid he is.

Please, lets all teach LOVE, RESPECT and TOLERANCE.

I want to share a poem my son wrote when he was 9 years old.

JUST BECAUSE I'M SMART
by Christian Amodio

Just because I'm smart
don't treat me different
don't call me names
Still, I am the same as you.

Just because I'm Smart
It doesn't mean I am a nerd
It doesn't mean you can be mean to me
It doesn't mean I am better or wise
Still ask me, because I may play with you.

Just because I'm smart
I am not better
I'm not worse
Just because I am smart....
I am the same AS YOU.
